Fanning's History
.
David Cowen president
.
David CowenCowen began his successful career as an undergraduate at Miami Univeristy of Ohio, where he began two entrepreneurial ventures: American Cap, a hat and T-shirt manufacturer, and American Products Company, a creator of advertising premiums and promotions. Over four years, he built both companies to more that $1 million in annual revenues serving major marketers including Pepsi-Cola, General Motors and Proctor & Gamble. After graduating with a bachelor of science degree in finance, Cowen joined Fanning Personnel in 1986 as office manager and placement counselor. For several years he placed senior-level secretaries and office-support personnel at New York-based Fortune 500 companies until a client asked if he could recruit technology professionals. Cowen launched Fanning Technical Search in 1996 without any previous technology knowledge. He taugh himself about the technology business, attending industry conferences and taking courses provided by major software companies.
.
In just three years, Cowen has grown FTS to more than $5 million in revenues and more than 30 full-time recruiters. Fanning Technical Search is one of the top providers of staffing services to New York's flourishing Silicon Alley, where its business has grown 500 percent in the last year alone. Cowen has been quoted on both recruiting and job search techniques in such leading publications as Fortune, Crain's New York Business, Computerworld, The Industry Standard, Internet Week, and Internet World.
.
"As IT professionals become the most sought-after workers in today's booming Internet economy, they're increasingly looking to work with headhunters who provide career counseling, rather than merely job placement," he explains. "And though online job boards are all the rage in the media, those static postings can't provide insight into an employer's culture or personality, or information about career pathing and training. By placing the best people in the most appropriate jobs, we're building strong client relationships and a network ofthe best - and happiest - experts in the field."
.
Cowen's hands-on approach is more common among retained search firms than with contigency firms like Fanning International. Before beginning a search, Fanning analyzes clients' long-term staffing needs and interviews each candidate personally. By focusing on both clients' needs and candidates' aspirations, and by providing extensive technology training to his recruiters, Cowen maintains a superior candidate flow and an unusually high placement rate.
